GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals Pilot Program Grant Recipients

We are pleased to announce that our first Request for Proposals for wellness pilot programs designed to benefit members of the GW health enterprise - that is trainees, non-clinical staff, clinical staff, faculty, and alumni of GW SMHS, MFA, and GWUH - was a great success!

Although it was difficult to select just a few awardees from among the large volume of proposals we received, it is our pleasure to announce the launch of the following highest-scoring wellness pilot programs:

  • Radical Listening: Over the course of this academic year, quarterly events offering a health humanities approach to practicing mindful presence will be offered. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with and discuss writings, videos, visual art, and more, as a means to explore empathic listening and communication. Open to all members of the GW health enterprise. Dates to be announced.
  • Second Victim Syndrome: In recognition of the toll unexpected and poor clinical outcomes can take on members of our GW medical enterprise, a survey of our clinical staff, trainees, and faculty will be conducted to better understand how the second victim phenomenon manifests at GW, and how we can best offer support to those in need. This work will be conducted in collaboration with the Wellness Advisory Council's Second Victim and Just Culture workgroup, and will inform coming initiatives.
  • Virtual Reality for Stress Management: Two pilot programs will offer stress-reducing virtual reality experiences over the course of the academic year. Initially, access to this technology will be limited to SMHS students and Emergency Department nurses, though it may be expanded to the broader GW medical enterprise depending on results of these pilots.
  • Women in Emergency Medicine Group: Serving as a pilot program for a broader population, this group will meet monthly throughout this academic year to discuss topics specific to female faculty, support development of strategies for professional advancement, and provide a forum for informal career mentoring for participants. Open to all female faculty in Emergency Medicine.

Please note that we anticipate announcing another Request for Proposals this winter.

New proposals as well as re-submissions are strongly encouraged. Questions? Please contact ctonn@gwu.edu(link sends e-mail).
