NBME Examination

This examination is the standard multiple choice examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners. This will be administered on the last day of the rotation. The examination consists of 100 questions on topics in General Surgery and the surgical specialties.

Practical Examination

This examination consists of 8 stations of practical, clinical scenarios. Each station will have a scenario with a history, physical and pertinent laboratory values. Most will have some adjunct, i.e. plain X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, pathology pictures (gross or microscopic). You will be asked multiple short answer questions for each station.

This is a timed examination and you will have 7 minutes per station. You will be given a warning when you have one minute remaining at each station. At the conclusion of the last question, you must hand in your examination. You WILL NOT have time at the end to fill in answers. The examination will be held in the clinic area of the Dept. of Surgery in the ACC building. Please refer to the "Schedules" section for time and place. 

Weekly Quizzes

Each weekly quiz consists of 10 multiple-choice questions on general surgery topics that were assigned during the prior week. There are 7 quizzes throughout the clerkship and students are allowed to drop the lowest quiz score from their quiz mean.
