Thoracic Surgery

The Division of Thoracic Surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is composed of two senior attending surgeons and an experienced physician assistant. The Division performs approximately 300 general thoracic operations per year. The majority of operations are performed minimally invasively (thoracoscopy) and includes the use of the DaVinci robot. Our surgeons treat benign and malignant conditions of the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, airway, pleura, and diaphragm.

The team is composed of the attending surgeons, residents, physician assistant, and two to five medical students (third and fourth year). Occasionally, there will be undergraduate students, physician assistant students, or international students on the service. Members of the team are involved in the pre-, intra-, and post-operative care of the patients at the level appropriate for their training and capability. The didactic portion of the rotation is supplemented with frequent “attending rounds” and thoracic surgery journal club.
