Media Advisory: Program Enhancing Access to Specialty Health Care in Medically Underserved Wards 7, 8

WASHINGTON (June 13, 2018) – Unity Health Care (Unity) and the George Washington University (GW), the GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, will discuss recent successful efforts to improve access to specialty health care in underserved areas of the District during a press conference with U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), D.C. Councilmember Vincent Gray (Ward 7) and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) on Friday, June 15, at 11 a.m.

A 2017 report issued by the DC Department of Health cited an overwhelming need for increased and enhanced access to specialty care in medically underserved communities – particularly in Wards 7 and 8. The GW grant created a telemedicine clinic at Unity’s Anacostia site, working to address this issue.

Nearly two years after receiving a $410,000 contribution from CareFirst, the region’s largest not-for-profit health insurer, GW and Unity are working to minimize barriers to care, reducing clinic no-show rates and increasing referral rates.

The press conference will include remarks from representatives of each organization, Rep. Holmes Norton, Councilmember Gray and a patient currently receiving care via telemedicine at the clinic. Speakers will be available for follow-up questions from media at the end of the program.

WHAT: Recognition of expanded specialty health care services to medically underserved populations in Wards 7 and 8 through the use of telemedicine.

WHO: U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), D.C. Councilmember Vincent Gray, CareFirst Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Community Affairs Maria Harris Tildon, Unity President and CEO Vince Keane, GW Medical Faculty Associates CEO Dr. Robert Kelly, and GW Vice President for Health Affairs and GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences Dean Dr. Jeffrey S. Akman.

WHEN:  Friday, June 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The press conference will begin promptly at 11:15 a.m.

WHERE: Unity Health Care’s Anacostia Center, 1500 Galen St, SE, Washington, D.C., 20020.
