Jesse M. Pines, M.D., director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy Research and professor of emergency medicine and health policy and management at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, served as co-editor of the newly published reference book, “Value and Quality Innovations in Acute and Emergency Care, 1st Edition.”

This book is designed to help emergency physicians and health care managers explore new ideas and improve the quality and efficiency of care that they provide. The book provides 20 case studies that serve as examples of successful innovations to enhance value. Among the innovations highlighted are: telehealth, observation medicine, high utilizer programs, and use of informatics to improve clinical decision support. A history of system development in the United States and abroad is detailed in the book as well, with discussion of subjects such as measurement and quality improvement, volume versus value-based care, and emergency department crowding.

“With the push to value-based care, providers and their organizations need to understand the best approaches to innovate in acute and emergency care,” said Dr. Pines. “This book provides an overview of general principles unique to emergency care, and many practical examples of how to improve outcomes and reduce cost.”

In addition to Pines, the book was co-edited by Jennifer L. Wiler, M.D., from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and Michael J. Ward, M.D., from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
