The GW Vaccine Research Unit (VRU) is currently experiencing an active season, with six diverse clinical trials open for enrollment simultaneously. From tackling seasonal respiratory viruses to investigating treatments for neglected tropical diseases, the VRU operates at the forefront of global public health.

By participating in these studies, volunteers play a direct role in the development of next-generation medical countermeasures. “Our mission is to bridge the gap between laboratory breakthrough and community protection,” said David Diemert, MD, professor of medicine and director of the GW Vaccine Research Unit. “Having this many active protocols reflects the breadth of expertise right here at GW.”

Current Opportunities for Participation

The VRU is currently seeking volunteers for the following studies. Please note that several have imminent enrollment deadlines:

  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Evaluation of a next-generation COVID-19 vaccine. Enrollment ends March 31.
  • Pfizer Flu mRNA Vaccine: For a novel mRNA-based influenza vaccine. Rapid enrollment ending early April.
  • IAVI Marburg & Ebola Viruses: Two separate trials investigating vaccines for these high-priority viral hemorrhagic fevers.
  • Whipworm Infection: A specialized study currently open to healthy volunteers.
  •  Pfizer Vaccine Study to Prevent a Diarrheal Disease: A long-term study evaluating a vaccine to prevent Clostridioides difficile infection.
