July 13, 2009

The George Washington Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Cyrus Katzen, philanthropist and co-founder of the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center.

Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen pledged $10 million in the fall of 2008 to establish a center dedicated to advancing cancer research and providing superior clinical care and education in the fight against cancer. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen’s pledge represents the largest ever received by GW.

The GW MFA already used a portion of the funds to construct a beautiful, state‐of‐the‐art infusion center designed to promote relaxation and encourage healing. With its opening in February 2009, both patients and staff have expressed their appreciation for the donation that transformed the cancer center experience.

In addition to the renovation, plans are underway to significantly increase GW's cancer research capacity. Dr. Robert Siegel, Director and Chairman of the Board of the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center, spoke of his admiration for Cy Katzen, stating that "his gift will permit our cancer research program to make great strides in cancer diagnosis, prevention and treatment."

"Our thoughts are with the Katzen family at this very difficult time” offered Stephen Badger, Chief Executive Officer of The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates “Dr. Katzen leaves a legacy of hope to cancer patients, their families and friends."

The Katzen family asked that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Dr. Katzen's memory may be made to the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center, George Washington University, 2150 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 1‐200, Washington, DC 20037.
