INTM 6201 Foundations in Integrative Medicine

This foundation course provides a framework for developing a patient centric approach to care.

Overview of Integrative Medicine in the US

Students learn an overview of the historical, sociocultural, and legal accounting of the evolution of medicine in the United States.

  • Discuss domains of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) of the National Institutes of Health

  • Examine usage patterns of CAM and history of integrative medicine 

  • Analyze competing models of therapeutic approaches, the ascendancy of biomedical reductionism, and a re-envisioned medical system based upon a personalized therapeutic paradigm are explored

Identity and Role of INTM Provider

The role and identity of the Integrative Medicine provider and review of basic professional competencies including fundamental attitudes, knowledge, and skills are analyzed.

Lifestyle Medicine

The foundations course will focus on Lifestyle Medicine topics to offer in-depth scientific knowledge of the relationships of lifestyle behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and sleep, with health and chronic diseases.  Students will compare and contrast definitions of Lifestyle Medicine and Integrative Medicine and develop a self care plan for nutrition, exercise and healthy behaviors throughout the course.

INTM 6202 Self Care Methods in Integrative Medicine

This course provides a framework to understand and apply Integrative medicine principles to the patient in relationship to self, others and their environment – the biopsychosocial domain. Students will explore the related topics of stress and discomfort, and methods to mitigate ‘dis-ease’ and emotional trauma, improve self-awareness and resiliency, cultivate social connectivity, and a sense of meaning and purpose.

Stress and Sleep

  • Define allostasis and allostatic load and discuss an integrated psycho-physiologic model of the stress response
  • Examine physiologic correlates to stress such as cortisol, heart rate variability, immune competence and autonomic balance
  • Discuss several psychological measurement tools for stress and sleep
  • Examine current literature on sleep, stress and methods to improve sleep quality
  • Demonstrate mastery of common herbs, supplements and behavioral interventions for common stress and sleep disorders

Emotional Trauma, Resiliency and Coping

  • Apply validated scales for emotional trauma, PTSD, and chronic stress and their relationship to chronic illnesses
  • Discuss the Childhood Trauma Checklist, and how perception, beliefs and culture impacts one’s definition of trauma, stress, and crisis
  • Evaluate the four-phase chronic illness model and review psychological coping strategies, framing techniques, and relaxation therapies to build emotional resiliency

INTM 6203 Nutritional Metabolism & Environmental Exposure

Students will analyze the relationships between nutrients and environmental exposures and the impact that they have on obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The learner will become familiar with a variety of dietary strategies and approaches, their evidence and application, as well as discuss current food policies and regulations. Key topics in medical toxicology will be addressed within the framework of exposure, chronicity, implication in human diseases, and appropriate removal. A complete review of cardiometabolic risk, endocrine and cardiovascular diseases will be conducted as well.

Environmental Medicine

  • Examine the emerging field of environmental medicine
  • Identify at risk and vulnerable populations, environmental conditions, and associated chronic illnesses
  • Discuss symptoms, disorders and diseases associated with exposures of heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals, drugs, nutrients, the natural environment and other toxic causes of oxidative stress
  • Examine the literature on exposure, exposure timing, and metabolic reserve in human health
  • Analyze assessment tools and strategies for identifying presence of biotoxins

Obesity, Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Diseases

  • Examine lifestyle, exposure and genetic predisposition in at risk populations for cardiometabolic disease
  • Review assessment tools and diagnostic strategies for common conditions such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease and heart failure
  • Discuss the central role obesity and inflammation play in cardiometabolic disease
  • Develop patient centric, culturally sensitive integrative medicine plans for the cardiometabolic patient to reduce risk and treat associated conditions

Endocrinology and Aging

  • Examine the role hormones play in health across the lifespan of women and men
  • Review assessment and treatment of common gender related conditions
  • Examine the evidence for risk and benefits of hormone management, mitigation of cancer risk, and alternative treatment options
  • Develop integrative treatment plans for women and men with respect to hormonal deficiencies and imbalances based on patient centric, culturally sensitive therapies

INTM 6204 Metabolic Networks in Integrative Medicine

Students will evaluate diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, immune and nervous systems and analyze the interconnectedness of these body systems in the context of chronic disease states. Emphasis will be placed on assessment of symptomatic, functional and disease markers and the development of integrative treatment plans.  Students will synthesize summary cases for INTM 6203 and 6204 and submit to faculty and students for review.

Gastroenterology and Immunology

  • Review epidemiology, pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying dysbiosis, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, inflammatory bowel disease and gut permeability
  • Analyze the relationship between the digestive tract and immune system
  • Review the various activities of the immune response in the common chronic diseases including inflammation, immune intolerance, allergic, oncologic, adaptive and innate responses
  • Analyze the evidence for the integrative medicine management of gastrointestinal and immune related conditions
  • Discuss validity and reliability of testing methods, conventional and functional, in digestive and immunologic disorders

Neurology and Mental Health

  • Review epidemiology, pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying headaches, neuropathy, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders and mood disorders and mental illness
  • Analyze the relationship between the peripheral and central nervous system with the digestive tract and immune system
  • Analyze the evidence for the integrative medicine management of neurological and psychiatric related conditions
  • Discuss validity and reliability of testing methods, conventional and functional, in neurological and psychiatric disorders

Integrative Medicine Management of Complex Cases

  • Synthesize medical knowledge, patient care skills and clinical judgment in a set of complex patient presentations drawn from INTM 6203 and INTM 6204
  • Demonstrate understanding of underlying causative mechanisms, integrated physiologic processes, and symptom complexes in selected chronic conditions

INTM 6205 Clinical Genomics, Proteomics, & Metabolomics

Students will review the emerging disciplines of clinical genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and the role of technology with Integrative Medicine. Expert faculty from the Human Metabolome Project will help students understand the promise, complexity and challenges related to ‘omics, current application and future trends. Students will apply evidence based ‘omics and technology towards prevention, predictive analysis and patient centered care.


  • Analyze ‘omics in clinical practice including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, phenomics, bioinformatics, pattern recognition, and metabolic network assessment  
  • Develop ability to interpret the ‘omics literature, including nutrigenomics, pharmacogenomics, cardiogenomics, and detoxigenomics
  • Describe the importance of isolating patterns of meaning within complex signals and complexity of analyzing large data sets

INTM 6206 Legal & Medical Ethics in Integrative Medicine

Students will evaluate the legal and ethical considerations in decision making related to patient care. Students will develop business strategies associated with running an integrative medicine practice.

  • Review the legal environment in which the Integrative Medicine physicians operate, how to assess risk and mitigate malpractice events
  • Understand common ethical issues that arise in medical practice today
  • Understand what is PHI, HIPAA Privacy Rule, HIPAA Security Rule, and the Patient Safety Rule
  • Understand what is able to be disclosed, to whom, for what reason and what is needed for disclosure
  • Review physician risk for referral to non-traditional providers
  • Discuss agency relationships and duty to supervise

INTM 6210 Practical Application of Integrative Medicine I

Students apply in-depth application of knowledge and skills of Integrative Medicine to develop comprehensive patient care cases. Students will synthesize principles of systems biology with lifestyle medicine interventions and integrative medicine therapies to restore healthy metabolism and vitality.  Under expert supervision, students will develop a series of cases either derived directly from their clinic, or provided through the program. The student is required to progressively enhance clinical reasoning and integrative clinical practice into the development of comprehensive clinical care plans.

Lifestyle Medicine

  • Practical review and round table discussions with faculty experts on nutrition, exercise prescription and the therapeutic relationship
  • Collect and analyze biometric, metabolic and self report data for patients requiring Lifestyle related interventions
  • Explore and share tools, technology and resources to create specific diet and exercise planning for patients
  • Demonstrate ability to track, coach and encourage patients between visits
  • Demonstrate competency in assigning appropriate diet and exercise for various chronic medical conditions
  • Develop a self care nutrition and exercise plan and reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses by end of course

Stress, Sleep and Group Visits

  • Examine evidence for measurement of the stress response and deploy psychological and physiologic measures in clinical practice
  • Conduct thorough sleep quality analyses and develop Integrative treatment plans based on sleep hygiene, dietary supplements, and mind body techniques
  • Review the group visit model in clinical practice and develop an 8-week program for patients utilizing the theme of Stress Management
  • Conduct thorough literature review of assigned dietary supplements, herbs and nutraceuticals for stress and sleep and submit for discussion by faculty and students

Healthy Metabolism: The Web of Physiology

  • Explore a metabolic model of physiology and its application in clinical systems biology
  • Examine the literature and therapeutic relevance for assigned domains of metabolic networks (i.e. Gut-Immune-Brain axis, Brain-Heart axis, and more) and submit professional slide presentations to summarize findings
  • Demonstrate understanding of prevention, early detection and restoration of functional disturbances to enhance wellness and mitigate common chronic diseases
  • Utilize technology and on line tools to enhance data gathering, analysis, and clinical plan development
  • Demonstrate proficiency of managing complex patients utilizing Lifestyle Medicine, clinical systems biology, predictive biomarkers, tools and technology to develop sophisticated Integrative Medicine plans

Dietary Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Botanicals and Drug Induced Nutrient Depletions

  • Review evidence for use of dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, and botanicals in medical conditions
