A Medical Mission

As Bedoor Alabbas raised her stethoscope, the 9-year-old Haitian girl she was examining shyly flinched away. What was this thing? Bedoor asked permission of the girl’s mother, then placed the earpieces on the girl’s head and the chestpiece on her own heart. Lub-dub, lub-dub. The child’s eyes widened and she began to giggle. “Then I asked if I could listen to her,” Alabbas recalled, “and the girl agreed.”

Global Refugees

Many of those fleeing the destruction take an arduous route out of Syria, traveling hundreds of miles on foot across Turkey to the Aegean Sea. From the Turkish coast, the refugees board overcrowded boats for a risky water-crossing to reach Greek islands Chios and Lesbos, and then it’s on to the Greek mainland and into Europe.

The Office of International Medicine Programs (IMP) is proud to announce that Rami Algahtani has received the Preliminary Intern of the Year Award in the Department of Medicine for AY 2014 – 2015.  Dr. Algahtani comes to IMP from King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and is currently participating in a neurology residency at GW.
