GBT Prostate Cancer Care

This project aims to identify current training gaps for oncology social workers in addressing the needs of GBT prostate cancer patients by conducting a survey and focus group to assess oncology social worker knowledge gaps and by interviewing GBT patients to obtain feedback on what they perceive as gaps in services. We will then develop an online training aimed at educating social workers, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses on unique health considerations in working with LGBTQ patients. Awareness of intersectionality will be foundational for all aspects of the project, including the complex confluence of sexual orientation and gender identity with race, ethnicity, age, ability, socioeconomic background, religion or spirituality, income and geography among other personal life experiences. This work is funded from September 2016-2017 by the Association of Oncology Social Work.
