ICD-9-CM codes have been in use in the U.S. since 1979 for classification of morbidity, reimbursement, epidemiology, healthcare service analysis and other purposes. CMS decided to move to ICD-10-CM in 2015. Since ICD codes are ubiquitous in the medical record, they play an important role in healthcare data analytics. This talk will describe a specific approach to translate between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes. The World Health Organization officially approved ICD-11 in May 2019, which is another big step in the ICD evolution. The changes in the new classification and their implications will also be discussed.
