Cells communicate between themselves by polypeptide messengers such as cytokines and growth factors that act via cell surface receptors. The major theme of this seminar is to understanding the mechanisms by which these receptors are regulated and alteration of these mechanisms in cancers. A specific focus is on downregulation of type I interferon receptor IFNAR1 and importance of this downregulation for escape from pre-cancerous cell senescence and for generation of the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment that protects malignant cells from cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and other components of anti-tumor immune response.
