Family Medicine at George Washington University will increase the footprint of Family Medicine by hiring Family Medicine faculty and fellows to provide mentorship and teaching to medical students at the School of Medicine while providing clinical services at the GW Medical Faculty Associates Immediate Primary Care sites.

Maria Portela

Bio

Dr. Portela is the Chief of the Family Medicine Section within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical Faculty Associates at George Washington University (GWU). She is also the Medical Director of the George Washington Immediate Primary Care Clinics and Co-Medical Director of the student led "Healing Clinic". Through these roles she works towards expanding the footprint of Primary Care and Family Medicine at GW and the Medical Faculty Associates to improve access and quality of care in the community as well as to increase family medicine exposure and mentorship opportunities for students. Dr. Portela is an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, where she serves as a Professional Development Mentor and a Public Health Mentor at the medical school.

Dr. Portela worked prior in the Department of Health and Human Services at the Health Resources Services Administration leading efforts to re-envision primary care training focused on transforming health care delivery systems aimed at improving access, quality of care and cost-effectiveness. Dr. Portela previously provided volunteer clinical services at Unity Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center in DC and in 2017 was an Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity at George Washington University.

Previously, while pursuing medical school training in her native Puerto Rico, she shared in the development of an assessment on the health and education sectors for President Obama’s Task Force on Puerto Rico’s Economic Development. Subsequently, she pursued residency training at Duke, and completed the Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard, where she obtained her master’s degree with concentrations in Public Health Leadership and Health Policy and Management. Dr. Portela has taken diverse leadership roles and has served in Health Equity local, state and national boards and committees. She is passionate about health care transformation, increasing access and quality of health care services to vulnerable populations, and about teaching, mentorship, diversity, and inclusion.

Andrea Anderson

Bio

Dr. Anderson is a recognized local, regional, and national leader in academic Family Medicine, Health Policy, and Advocacy. She is well known to GW as she is the Course Director for the Transitions to Residency Course (formerly POM IV), a Professional Development Mentor, and the adviser to the Family Medicine Interest Group for several years advising over 20 students to successfully match to competitive FM programs throughout the country. She is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and has taught students in the Primary Care Rotation and LPCC for over 10 years. She is a proud 2017 graduate of the GW Master Teacher program. Nationally she serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Medicine, the third-largest member board of the ABMS, which certifies over 92,000 Family Physicians. She is an appointed member of the National Ethics and Professionalism Committee of the Federation of State Medical Boards. Dr. Anderson serves on the NBME’s USMLE Management committee and writes USMLE questions for the Introduction to Clinical Medicine section. Dr. Anderson is the Chair of the DC Board of Medicine, a jurisdiction with over 13,000 licensees. Nationally, she is an appointee to the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Committee, a committee comprised of three representatives from each of the four major national academic Family Medicine organizations. Her work recently gained national attention when she was awarded the 2019 Advocate Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine for her work teaching advocacy to students and residents. She has lectured and testified extensively on issues of professionalism, community medicine, and primary care workforce, most recently testifying before the Senate Committee on Housing, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP). Dr. Anderson comes to GW from Unity Health Care where she spent 15 years serving roles such as Medical Director of the Upper Cardozo Health Center, Medical Director of Family Medicine, a Core Faculty member in the National Family Medicine Residency Program, and a Family Doctor practicing full-spectrum Family Medicine. She completed her education at Brown University and the Alpert School of Medicine at Brown, her Family Medicine residency and academic medicine fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the 2016 STFM Emerging Leaders Fellowship.

Marcus Davis

Bio

Dr. Marcus Davis is a native of Washington, D.C. He received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Yale University. He received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed residency training in emergency medicine and family medicine at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware. His interests include violence intervention, healthcare disparities and medical education.

 Gobindveer Sahi

Bio

Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine with a focus on primary care sports medicine, Dr. Gobindveer Sahi sees patients at our GW Metro IPC clinics located in Washington, DC. A proficient provider, he manages a wide array of concerns, such as sports injuries, muscle strains, and concussions. Dr. Sahi completed his education in medicine at the American University of Antigua College of Medicine. He advanced his training by completing a residency in family medicine at the University of Minnesota. Additionally, he undertook a primary care sports medicine fellowship at St. Luke’s University Health Network, Bethlehem. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Sahi believes in providing comprehensive and holistic medical care, to enhance his patients’ overall health. He believes in providing patients with all the information they need to make educated decisions about their health care. He takes pride in helping a wide variety of patients with various musculoskeletal concerns.
