Critical care is the timely assessment and intervention of life-threatening conditions through advanced monitoring, devices as well a pharmacologic therapies to resuscitate and attempt to reverse organ failures. For many of our sickest patients arriving to the hospital, their journey begins in the Emergency Department where such timely interventions can have a life-altering influence on their course. The Section of Critical Care was established within the Department of Emergency Medicine to advance and improve the delivery of such care starting in the Emergency Department and transitioning to the Intensive Care Unit. Through the establishment of multidisciplinary protocols and process improvement, as well as emphasizing research and education of medical students, Emergency Medicine resident and Critical Care fellows, our goal is to deliver the best care for the sickest patients arriving to the Emergency Department.
