GW COVID-19 Testing Options

GW is now offering an appointment-only COVID-19 testing site for adults with a physician/health care provider referral. Our drive-through test collection site will be open for testing in Washington, D.C. from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning April 6, 2020. The drive-through testing site will be at 20th and H Streets NW (cars entering at 22nd and H Street NW). Our scheduled walk-up testing collection site will be at 22nd and I St NW with Monday through Friday with appointment hours from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.

You must have a physician/health care provider referral to make an appointment. Testing is by appointment only. We are offering a walk-up option for patients without a car.

These on-site testing options are a service of the George Washington University Hospital, GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Instructions for Patients

To Obtain An Order for Testing

If you are experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other flu-like symptoms, contact your regular health care provider to discuss them and receive an assessment. If you need emergency care, go to your closest emergency department. If you have had significant, close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, contact your regular healthcare provider or schedule a consultation with a GW provider to discuss testing.

If Your Health care Provider Has Ordered Testing

If the order is placed by a non-GW health care provider, direct your healthcare provider to fill out the online form here:

Once your provider's request has been received and processed (allow at least one hour), contact (202) 741-3595 Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM for scheduling.

Once You’ve Been Scheduled

On the day of your appointment, please arrive during the 60-minute window that you have been provided. Please do not travel to the testing site until you have been given an appointment. You should bring a personal identification card (driver's license or passport of the person to be tested) with you to the appointment.

Drive Through Testing: If you are driving, enter the testing lane at 22rd & H Street NW. Keep your window rolled up and follow the instructions of staff when you pull into the testing lane. Directions for patients scheduled for drive-thru appointments.

Walk-Up Testing: If you are not driving, arrive for your appointment at the corner of 22nd and I Street NW at the Medical Faculty Associates building. Approach the registration desk outside the building for instructions. Directions for patients scheduled for walk-up testing.

Test Results

  • Results are currently taking approximately 2 - 3 days for most patients
  • Results from testing will be sent to the healthcare provider who ordered the tests. Patients should wait to be contacted with results or contact the healthcare provider who ordered the test if they are seeking results.

Instructions for Health care Providers

You must be a licensed health care provider with an established relationship with the patient who has evaluated the patient and determined that testing for COVID-19 is indicated. Only COVID-19 samples are being collected (GW cannot fulfill requests for other diagnostic testing or specimen collection). You must submit a LabCorp order for a COVID-19 test through your EHR or through LabCorp’s electronic order and results portal. Print a copy to be faxed to GW. At this time, due to logistical limitations, GW is currently only able to support tests ordered through LabCorp. Contact LabCorp support for any assistance with this (877) 774-3226.


Non-GW MFA Provider Process:

  1. Order the COVID-19 test through LabCorp (test code 139900) and print a copy of the requisition.
  2. Complete the electronic GW referral form online here:
  3. Fax a copy of the completed LabCorp order to: (202) 846-8630.
  4. Allow GW at least one hour to review the submitted documents, then direct your patient to call GW at (202) 741-3595 Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM to schedule their test collection.
  5. Test results will come back to you. Please promptly communicate the results to your patient once you have received them.
