Applying to Residency Programs #10: appropriate referencing in CV and ERAS

4th Year Advising Tip - August 14, 2014
August 14, 2014

Dear Class,

It has come to our attention as we work on your MSPE's, that not all of you are correctly referencing various forms of scholarly work in you CV's (and thus probably not correctly in ERAS). therefore, here are some tips:

1) You CANNOT list anything as a publication unless it has actually been published already or FORMALLY accepted for publication by a journal or publisher (in the case of textbooks or other monographs). See below for how to list ACCEPTED publications.
2) "Presentations" refer to presentations that have been FORMALLY accepted or invited at regional or national academic meetings. Presentations that you do in the context of your education, for instance on rounds or in clerkship conferences, etc. are NOT academic presentations and should not be listed on your CV.
3) If you have presented an abstract orally or as a poster at an ACADEMIC meeting, you must fully reference the authors, poster title, and the name/location/date of the meeting.
4) Research that is 'in progress' CANNOT be listed under publications or presentations, even if you have submitted it for publication. Such work can be described under 'research experience', but not as publications.

So, here are some examples of how to reference common types of publications or presentations:

M. Mouse, D. Duck, F. Leghorn, WS Schroth, E. Fudd. "How to Appropriately Reference Items for your CV." The Foggy Bottom Journal of Medicine, 12(4): 118-126, 2014.
M. Mouse, D. Duck, F. Leghorn, WS Schroth, E. Fudd. "How to Appropriately Reference Items for your CV." The Foggy Bottom Journal of Medicine, (accepted for publication August 1st, 2014)
M. Mouse, D. Duck, F. Leghorn, WS Schroth, E. Fudd. "How to Appropriately Reference Items for your CV." Poster Presentation at the Foggy Bottom Regional Medical Conference, Washington, DC, August 12, 2014.
M. Mouse, D. Duck, F. Leghorn, WS Schroth, E. Fudd. "How to Appropriately Reference Items for your CV." Chapter 4 in How to Ace your Residency Applications. editors. Y. Haywood, and L. Norris, Foggy Bottom Press, Washington, DC. 2014.
M. Mouse, D. Duck, F. Leghorn, WS Schroth, E. Fudd. "How to Appropriately Reference Items for your CV." Oral Research Presentation at the Foggy Bottom Regional Medical Conference, Washington, DC, August 12th, 2014.

If you have questions about how to reference things you can talk to your advisors, your advisory dean, or one of the library staff (they are excellent at this sort of thing!).
