The BSHS with a major in Bioinformatics is a degree completion program. Students tranfer in 60 credits from a regionally accredited college or university and then complete 60 credits hours at GW for a total of 120 credit hours, divided into three degree components:

  • General Education (47 credit hours)
  • Electives (13 credit hours)
  • GW Coursework (60 credit hours)

The curriculum will be delivered in a blended format where some courses will be taught 100% face to face, while others will be taught 100% online. The face-to-face courses will be taught at the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA.

Transferable Coursework (60 credit hours)

For an assessment on the transferability of your previous coursework, please contact the program office. Coursework will be evaluated for transfer using the following criteria:

  • College-level
  • Academic in nature
  • Completed at a regionally accredited institution
  • A minimum cumulative and science GPA of 2.5 or better (C- grades and lower do not transfer)

General Education (47 credit hours)

  • English Composition (3 credits)
  • Humanities (3 credits)
  • Social Sciences (6 credits)
  • Biology with lab (8 credits)
  • General or inorganic Chemistry with lab (8 credits)
  • Organic Chemistry with lab or Genetics with lab (4 credits)
  • Computer Science - or related coursework in programming languages (8 credits)
  • Calculus (4 credits)
  • Statistics (3 credits)

Applicants may complete outstanding coursework through additional Health Sciences Distance Education courses.

Electives (13 credit hours)

Additional biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and statistics are recommended.

Applicants missing one or more general education courses may be considered for admission, if they have junior standing (i.e. 60 college credits).
