The Bethony Laboratory, based in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, focuses on pre-clinical and clinical support of vaccines and translational research.
What We Do
Vaccine Projects
For more than a decade, the Bethony Lab has supported multiple vaccine projects. Some of lab’s work includes:
- Immunology and serology assays (rodent and human) to support and evaluate pre-clinical testing, including potency assessment, and clinical (phase 1) trials.
- Active membership of the Sabin Product Development Partnership (PDP) and the novel, low-cost, effective HOOKworm VACcine to Control Human Hookworm Infection in endemic countries (HOOKVAC) program.
- Partnership with other vaccine development programs and area partners in their research.
Our involvement in translational medicine includes:
- Biobanking
- Epidemiology
- Cohort surveys
- Biomarker development includes:
- Develop new methodologies and approaches to circulating microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) and also Opisthorchis viverrini (OV) induced intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC).
- Use parallel proteomic approaches with our partners in Thailand and Australia to identify protein biomarkers.
- Subsequent validation of these miRNAs or proteins for rapid and non-invasive diagnosis/prognosis of these diseases and other tumor based cancers.
