The Inter-professional Education Project (IPEP) is an innovative model that investigates the use of mentored coaching and simulation as a clinical teaching method to promote interprofessional education among health care students. IPEP strives to:
- Develop leadership capacity
- Promote collaborative behavior
- Increase self-reflection and empowerment
- Instill caring attitudes in members of inter-professional teams
IPEP participants were selected from GW's MD, Nursing, Physician Assistant, and Physical Therapy programs, and engage faculty experts from the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership and from programs in Health Care Quality, Medicine, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant, and the School of Nursing. Students attended workshops and group coaching sessions in interdisciplinary teams.
The results are currently being analyzed, but initial findings indicate that integrating interprofessional students for simulations and mentored coaching – as part of core health care curriculum – can be an effective way to enhance team-based health care delivery, leadership capacity, and professional development at the individual and group level.
