Specialty Training in Colon & Rectal Surgery

The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery brings the latest thinking, techniques and technology in the discipline of colon and rectal surgery to The George Washington University. The Colon and Rectal Service comprises one of the three main University clinical rotations.
The Division is very active in the treatment of colorectal carcinoma, inflammatory bowel disease, physiological disorders of the colon and rectum and the broad spectrum of anorectal disorders, and is the major referral center in the mid-Atlantic region for these disorders. The residents on this service routinely participate in all aspects of the evaluation and treatment of patients.

Recent study and research efforts have concentrated on the areas of colorectal physiology and motility, ambulatory surgery, alternative procedures for the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, sphincter-saving procedures, and endorectal and intraoperative ultrasound. Excellent research opportunities are available. Transanal endoscopic microsurgery and laparoscopic colectomy are performed on a routine basis. In addition, continuing medical education courses on lasers, colorectal physiology, transanal endoscopic microsurgery and ultrasound are regularly offered.
